A water softener is a device designed to remove calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺), the primary minerals responsible for water hardness. Hard water can cause scale buildup in pipes, appliances, and industrial equipment, leading to reduced efficiency and increased maintenance costs. Water softeners work through an ion exchange process, where water flows through a resin bed containing tiny beads coated with sodium (Na⁺) or potassium (K⁺) ions. As hard water passes through, calcium and magnesium ions attach to the resin, replacing the sodium or potassium ions. The softened water then exits the system, free from excess hardness minerals. To maintain effectiveness, the system periodically undergoes regeneration, during which a brine solution flushes the resin bed, removing accumulated calcium and magnesium and restoring the sodium ions for continued operation.
